Instead of the original cup, Argentina only owns a gold-plated bronze model cup. The original cup is housed in the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich, Switzerland.
In fact.. the cup awarded to the winners of the FIFA World Cup was first called the Jules Rimet Trophy. These trophies have been awarded to winners since the 1930s. The original trophy was awarded only to teams that had won the World Cup three times. This continued until the 1970s.
A 3.8 kg, gold-plated Rimet trophy is awarded to the winners. But it was stolen twice. Once in 1966, and again in 1983, it was stolen. The first time it is stolen, it is found within a week. So far no one has been able to identify the second one.
Since 1974, the FIFA World Cup has been awarded to winners instead of the Rimet Trophy. It measures 36.5 cm in length, weighs 6.175 kg and is made of 4,927 grams of pure gold. The World Cup trophy is worth $1,61,000. Due to security reasons, the winners could not take home such a valuable trophy.
