Lok Sabha Elections: Indira Gandhi’s killer’s son, which seat is he claiming?

Chandigarh: The son of one of the two assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is contesting from Faridkot Lok Sabha seat in Punjab. 45-year-old Sarabjit Singh on Thursday said that he will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Faridkot seat in Punjab.

Sarabjit said that many have suggested him to contest the election from Faridkot, but he will contest the election as an independent candidate. He is the son of Bayant Singh, one of the two assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Bayant Singh and Satwant Singh were the bodyguards of the then Prime Minister. He assassinated Gandhi on 31 October 1984 at the Prime Minister’s residence. Sarabjit Singh contested and failed in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Bathinda seat and got 1.13 lakh votes. He contested the 2007 Punjab Assembly elections from Bhadaur seat in Barnala but failed.

Singh tried his luck again from Fatehgarh Sahib seat in 2014 Lok Sabha elections but again lost. Singh’s mother Bimal Kaur was elected Member of Parliament from Ropar in 1989. Polling for 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab will be held on June 1.

AAP has fielded actor Karamjit Anmol from Faridkot Lok Sabha seat, while BJP has fielded singer Hans Raj Hans. Faridkot constituency is represented by Congress MP Mohammad Sadiq.
