Dhaka Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud praised Sahitya Academy Award-winning Indian writer Rita Chowdhury’s new book summarizing the 1971 liberation war, saying many in his country will learn a lot about India’s important role from the novel. Mahmud was presented with the first volume of the special Bengali edition of the three-volume ‘Neverland-Zero Hour’ at a function here.

The Bangladesh Minister commented that the documentation of the Liberation War of Bangladesh is a unique contribution and the novel will be an important historical document. The minister also recalled his personal experience during the liberation war and said that many people in Bangladesh are unfamiliar with India’s efforts during the war and the new generation will learn a lot from this novel.

The war in East Pakistan began on 25 March 1971 after a surprise move by Pakistani troops at midnight and ended on 16 December. In the same year, Pakistan conceded defeat and surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces of freedom fighters and Indian soldiers in Dhaka. “Neverland – Zero Hour” was originally released in Assamese last year and sheds light on the lesser-known facts of the war. The war not only changed global geography, but forced millions of people to flee their countries.

Speaking at the event on April 20, Chowdhury, former chairperson of the National Book Trust of India, said that he was present in Bangladesh when it was not independent and witnessed all the moments during the country’s independence.
